Be careful not to short out battery terminals. Do not smoke or use open flame near
batteries. Batteries may explode from a spark. Battery acid is harmful to skin and eyes.
Wear safety goggles and acid-proof gloves when battery cover must be removed or when
adding electrolyte.
Avoid electrolyte contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. If battery electrolyte spills, take
immediate action to stop burning effects:
-
External: Immediately flush with cold running water to remove all acid.
-
Eyes: Flush with cold water for at least 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical
attention.
-
Internal: Drink large amounts of water or milk. Follow with milk of magnesia,
beaten egg, or vegetable oil. Seek immediate medical attention.
-
Clothing or Vehicle: Wash at once with cold water. Neutralize with baking soda
or household ammonia solution.
Injury will result if acid contacts skin or eyes. Wear rubber apron to prevent clothing
being damaged.
Remove all jewelry such as rings, dog tags, bracelets, etc. If jewelry or tools contact positive
electrical circuits, a direct short may result. Damage to equipment, injury or death to personnel
may occur.
