6-4. STARTER REPAIR (CONT).
Adhesives, solvents, and sealing compounds can burn easily, can give off harmful vapors, and
are harmful to skin and clothing. To avoid injury or death, keep away from open fire and use
in well-ventilated area. If adhesive, solvent, or sealing compound gets on skin or clothing,
wash immediately with soap and water.

Coat threads of five screws (65) with sealing
compound.

Align matchmarks and install preformed
packing (67) and shift housing (56) on field
ring (15) with five lockwashers (66) and
screws (65).
(20)
Slide armature shaft (31) into shift
housing (56) until 0.5 in. (12.7 mm) of shaft
sticks out.

Install brake washer (73) on armature
shaft (31).
NOTE
Shaft may have to be rotated to
align splines.

Pull cams (74) out of shift housing (56) and
position drive assembly (63) on cams and
armature shaft (31).
(23)
Slide armature shaft (31) through drive
assembly (63).
NOTE
Perform Step (24) if bushing
was removed.
Hole in bushing is off-
center. Narrow edge goes in
first.
Hole in bushing must be
aligned with wick bore in
nose housing.

Install bushing (64) in nose housing (55).
